Walkley Foundation becomes first organisation to join WORSHIPP Campaign

The Walkley Foundation became the first organisation to join the WORSHIPP campaign by unveiling two meeting rooms at its Sydney headquarters dedicated to two WalkleyAward-winning female journalists. Walkley CEO Shona Martyn said the Foundation chose ground-breaking reporters Eva Sommer and Catherine Martin to honour.

Eva Sommer (1934-2019), was a 22-year-old cadet journalist when she became the first female winner of a Walkley at the initial Awards in 1956. Catherine Martin (1918–2009) was the first female Gold Walkley winner in 1978.

“The Walkley Foundation is proud to support the WORSHIPP campaign recognising that far too many significant women journalists have fallen off the radar,” Shona Martyn said. “Eva Sommer and Catherine Martin are but two of many but we hope that their recognition also prompts reflection on other high achievers.

“The WORSHIPP program dovetails with the Walkley Foundation’s determination to reflect the contributions women have made to the Australian media industry over decades. “We realised as a board that we must do better,” said Adele Ferguson, chair of the Walkley Foundation Board.

Tribune director and founder John Hurst said he and managing director Bo Briedis chose Sukkar because she is a bluechip businesswoman, dedicated philanthropist and committed champion of women in sport.

Australia’s first female Horse Racing Editor Caryl Williamson has been honoured by AAP.

Australia’s first female horseracing Editor, the late Caryl Williamson (1953-2020), has been honoured by her employers, Australian Associated Press CEO Lisa Davies and Editor Andy Drummond (pictured), with a Corner dedication in their Sydney headquarters as part of the WORSHIPP campaign.

For almost a quarter of a century Caryl worked as a racing journalist for AAP, rising to become one of the most esteemed female reporters on the track, whose coverage of Melbourne Cups, Cox Plates and Golden Slippers appeared around the country and the world.
